Cosmetic surgery is different from critical or reconstructive surgery because it is used to ‘enhance’ or ‘make different’ someone’s physical appearance. In this way, it is not essential to life or health. In 2006 more than 11 million procedures were carried out in the United States and is already a multi-billion dollar business. In other countries, like China, it is an accepted practice and its use has increased rapidly over the last few years. It has become so normal that students graduating from university are sometimes offered enhancements as a reward for performing well in school.
